My Kindle can't reach the store anymore. What now?

On May 20, 2026, Amazon cut off Kindles from 2012 and earlier. They can't buy, borrow or download from the Kindle Store anymore. The Kindle itself still works. Here's what you can do, simplest first.

01 What changed

The store is gone. The reader isn't.

Every Kindle and Fire tablet released in 2012 or earlier lost the ability to buy, borrow or download Kindle Store content on the device. That's all that changed.

  • Books already on it stay. You can keep reading them.
  • Sideloading still works. You can still copy your own books onto it.
  • If you deregister it or factory-reset it, it can't be registered again.

03 Your options

Four ways forward, simplest first

  1. 01

Keep using it as it is

If the books you want are already on it, you don't need to do anything. Keep it charged and keep reading.

Don't deregister it and don't factory-reset it. Once you do, it can't be registered again, and a reset wipes the books on it.

  2. 02

Copy books over USB, with Calibre

No jailbreak. Plug the Kindle into a computer; it shows up as a drive. Copy MOBI, AZW3, PDF or TXT files into the documents folder.

These Kindles don't read EPUB. Calibre (free, for Windows, macOS and Linux) converts EPUB and sends it to the Kindle in one step.

  3. 03

    Jailbreak it and install KOReader

A jailbreak lets you run KOReader, a free reader app. It opens EPUB directly, handles PDFs better, and lets you use your own fonts.

Follow the Kindle Modding Wiki. It checks your model and firmware and tells you which method applies. Jailbreaking is at your own risk; read each step before you do it.

  4. 04

Send books from your phone with PageDrop

Once KOReader is on the Kindle, PageDrop sends books from an Android phone over Wi-Fi. No cable, no computer. It searches free libraries, converts what needs converting, and fixes titles and covers.

How sending from a phone works.

04 Questions

FAQ

Will the books already on my Kindle disappear?

No. Books already on the device stay, and you can keep reading them.

Should I deregister or factory-reset it?

No. An affected Kindle that is deregistered or factory-reset can't be registered again. A reset also wipes the books on it.

Can I still put new books on it?

Yes. Sideloading still works. Plug it into a computer over USB and copy books across, or let Calibre do it. No jailbreak needed.

Do I have to jailbreak it?

No. You only need a jailbreak if you want KOReader, a different reader app, or to send books without a cable.

Why can't my Kindle open EPUB files?

These older Kindles read MOBI, AZW, PDF and TXT, not EPUB. Calibre converts EPUB for you. KOReader, after a jailbreak, opens EPUB directly.

Does PageDrop work on an iPhone?

No. PageDrop is an Android app (Android 8 or newer). On an iPhone, use USB and Calibre, or a jailbreak and a manual SFTP app.

Can PageDrop fix scanned PDFs?

No. PDF reflow works on PDFs that contain text. Scanned pages are pictures of text and aren't OCRed; keep those as PDF.

Does PageDrop cost anything?

No. It's free and open source under GPL-3.0. No account, no analytics, no ads.
