Kindle 4 and Kindle 5 (2011, 2012)

The small, buttons-only Kindles: no touchscreen and no keyboard. The Kindle 4 came out in 2011; the Kindle 5 is its 2012 refresh. They're close enough to share a page.

01 Still works

After May 20, 2026

  • Reading the books already on it.
  • Copying your own books over USB, with or without Calibre. No jailbreak needed.

It can't buy, borrow or download from the Kindle Store anymore. Don't deregister or factory-reset it: it can't be registered again.

02 Jailbreak and KOReader

Where to start

Which jailbreak applies depends on your firmware version, and that changes over time. We don't repeat it here. The Kindle Modding Wiki checks your model and firmware and walks you through the right method.

KOReader publishes builds for different Kindle generations. The wiki and KOReader's install guide say which one is yours.

03 PageDrop

Status: untested

PageDrop has not been tested on this model. It talks to KOReader over SSH, so if KOReader and its SSH server run, it should work. We haven't confirmed it. Tried it? Open an issue or say so on Discord with the model and firmware, and it goes in the table as "Reported".

04 Known quirks

Worth knowing

  • No touchscreen and no keyboard: you type with the five-way pad and an on-screen keyboard. Searching on the device is slow, which is one reason to search on a phone instead.
  • KOReader's SSH server only runs while KOReader is open. If the Kindle goes to sleep, it drops off Wi-Fi; wake it before sending.
  • The Kindle's own reader doesn't open EPUB. Convert with Calibre, or read EPUB in KOReader.
  • The wiki covers the two separately where it matters. Follow the page for your exact model.
