Send books to a jailbroken Kindle from just your phone
If your Kindle runs KOReader, it already has an SSH server. Your phone can use it to put books on the Kindle over Wi-Fi. Here are two ways: PageDrop, and doing it by hand.
What you need
- A Kindle that is jailbroken and has KOReader installed. Not there yet? The Kindle Modding Wiki walks you through it. Some jailbreak methods need a computer once; after that, you don't.
- An Android phone, Android 8 or newer, for PageDrop. Any phone works for the manual way.
- The phone and the Kindle on the same Wi-Fi.
Still on a stock Kindle and don't want to jailbreak? Use USB and Calibre instead. See your options.
Five steps. The first two, once.
Turn on KOReader's SSH server
On the Kindle, open KOReader, then Tools (the cog) → Network → SSH server. On older KOReader versions it's under Tools → More tools. It only runs while KOReader is open.
Install PageDrop
Download the APK from GitHub Releases, or add https://github.com/spandan-kumar/PageDrop to Obtainium for automatic updates.
Find your Kindle
In PageDrop, tap Find my Kindle. It looks for KOReader on your network. You can also type the Kindle's IP address.
Find a book
Search Project Gutenberg, Standard Ebooks, the Internet Archive or your own OPDS catalogs. Or share a file to PageDrop from any app on your phone.
Send it
PageDrop converts it if the Kindle can't read it as is, writes the title, author and cover into the file, and copies it over Wi-Fi. It shows up on the Kindle home screen and in KOReader's library.
About conversion
By default, a book that needs converting goes to PageDrop's conversion server, after PageDrop asks, and is deleted about 24 hours later. One switch in Settings keeps everything on the phone. Every host PageDrop contacts, listed.
About PDFs
PDF reflow unwraps broken lines and strips running headers and page numbers. It works on PDFs that contain text. Scanned PDFs aren't OCRed; send those as PDF.
The manual way works too
You don't need PageDrop for this. Any SFTP app, on Android or iPhone, can copy files to the Kindle:
- Turn on KOReader's SSH server, as above.
- Connect to the Kindle's IP address on port
2222, userroot. In KOReader's SSH menu, either turn on "Login without password" or set up key login (the menu says where the key goes). - Copy books into
/mnt/us/documents.
That's all PageDrop does underneath. What you give up: finding books, converting EPUB for the Kindle's own reader, and fixing titles and covers are on you.
No phone at all
KOReader can also browse OPDS catalogs and download books right on the Kindle. It works. Typing searches on an e-ink keyboard is the price.
