Kindle Paperwhite (1st gen) (2012)

The first Paperwhite: front-lit touchscreen, released in 2012. It's the Kindle PageDrop was built on.

01 Still works

After May 20, 2026

  • Reading the books already on it.
  • Copying your own books over USB, with or without Calibre. No jailbreak needed.
  • KOReader, after a jailbreak, and PageDrop on top of it.

It can't buy, borrow or download from the Kindle Store anymore. Don't deregister or factory-reset it: it can't be registered again.

02 Jailbreak and KOReader

Where to start

Which jailbreak applies depends on your firmware version, and that changes over time. We don't repeat it here. The Kindle Modding Wiki checks your model and firmware and walks you through the right method.

KOReader publishes builds for different Kindle generations. The wiki and KOReader's install guide say which one is yours.

03 PageDrop

Status: tested

PageDrop was built and tested on this model, firmware 5.6.1.1. It's the one Kindle we know works end to end.

04 Known quirks

Worth knowing

  • KOReader's SSH server only runs while KOReader is open. If the Kindle goes to sleep, it drops off Wi-Fi; wake it before sending.
  • Books PageDrop sends land in two places: /mnt/us/documents for the Kindle home screen and /mnt/us/Books for KOReader.
  • The Kindle's own reader doesn't open EPUB. Convert with Calibre, or read EPUB in KOReader.
  • Tested on firmware 5.6.1.1 only. Other firmware versions should behave the same, but we haven't checked.
